      X-ray machines work like cameras (the older ones analog not digital). If you turn such a machine on it will send out electromagnetic waves (X-rays) which can penetrate any matter or material to a different level. Muscles and bones for example absorb X-rays differently thats why we can see them in different colours (black, grey, white) on a film.
