Very good question. I have to admit I didn’t know the answer to this one but here what I have found after a bit of reading.

The first land plants evolved from algae found in water around 630 million years ago (630,000,000 years!) . When they first evolved to cope with being on land the world would have been a very different place mainly made up of rocks instead of soil. Since then they have slowly evolved to the wide range of plants we see today.

        Thanks!
