The Sun has about 7 billion (7,000,000,000) years of fuel left. It’s about 4.6 billion years old at the moment so there is still a lot more to go!
But unfortunately for us in about 1.1 billion years the sun will be so hot that the sea on Earth would have boiled and there will be no land water – meaning we probably won’t survive – unless we have left Earth for another planet!
The sun has billions of years of fuel left. The sun is a different chemical reaction than those found on nuclear power stations on earth. On earth the powerstation splits uranium atoms, releasing energy. The sun joins hydrogen atoms together to make new helium and releases energy.
The sun is getting bigger and bigger. One day it will swell up and “eat” mercury, venus, and the earth – but that won’t be for a few billion years.
Every second, 600 million tons of hydrogen are converted into helium in the Sun’s core. For the Sun, this process got going 4.6 billion years ago, and it has been generating energy this way every since. But there isn’t an unlimited amount of hydrogen in the core of the Sun. In fact, it’s only got another 7 billion years worth of fuel left.
