• Question: Is it hard, on your emotional status, when you have to put an animal down?

      It can be very hard yes. It is easier when the animal is old or very ill with no chance of recovery. Then when you know that the animal is suffering and is only likely to suffer more it is easier as you feel like it is the only thing you can do to help. But when the animal is young or something could be done to help it (such as animals that are put to sleep because their owners’ can’t afford treatment) that is much harder and I have on some occasions in the past refused and rehomed the pet (obviously with the owner’s permission!).

    thankyou. i was considering being a vet myself as i dont mind blood and operating ect but i was kind of put of my finding it too hard to have to put and animal down. i can understand that it is easier when the animal is ill or old as i recently had an old sick cat of mine put to sleep and i didnt feel too upset as i knew it was the right thing to do. Thankyou for answering my question and i can now reconsider becoming a vet!
