• Question: How did you do in A-Levels to get into Oxford? Also, is it possible to set up fusion on a small scale, for experimental purposes? I've always wanted to see it work for myself.

Asked by guesswork to David, Rebecca, Simon, Verity, Wei on 15 Jun 2011. This question was also asked by claytboii.

I got A’s in maths, physics, chemistry and general studies.

That’s a great question about fusion reactor sizes. A commercial reactor will have to be a certain size, otherwise the reaction requires more energy to start it than you can extract from it. In the UK we have a test reactor called JET ( http://www.jet.efda.org/ ). It is not big enough to produce energy but instead is important for learning about the physics behind fusion.

They are now building a new reactor in the south of France called ITER ( http://www.iter.org ) which is bigger than JET and will produce more energy than it consumes. This will be an important step to nuclear fusion becoming a commercial source of energy.
