The career pathway for a scientist generally goes PhD, post-doc, research fellow, lecturer, senior lecturer, reader then Professor so it was the next rung on the ladder after completing my PhD. The work I’d completed as part of my PhD was the basis for the project that I’m working on now so it really was a natural step for me as a scientist.
That’s the boring and logical bit. The fun bit is that I was inspired to become a scientist in the first place by my Dad. He’s a chemist and while I was growing up, he always made science sound so cool, some of the things he got up to when he was training just made me want to join in the fun! And so far, I’ve had a great time – I get paid to do something I love, something I find totally interesting and for having a laugh with my colleagues and friends every single day. What more could I ask for?
