I think science can teach you a really helpful way to think about the world – to be curious and look for evidence objectively and make up your own mind about things. This helps in so many areas like when seeing the news or listening to politicians/advertisers/influencers. It can also be helpful with looking after your own mental health – if I feel bad about something I should be able to look at the situation objectively and see if there’s evidence to back it up. (This can be difficult in reality, but is helpful).
I also think there is so much potential in science to make the world a better place, in health, technology, tackling the climate crisis. It can also be great fun as you try to think of new ways to look at something or test things.
These things aren’t exclusive to a career/interest in science (I really enjoyed history at school as it has some of the same evidence-cased critical thinking), but it does have a lot to offer.
I find science fascinating. I am very curious and want to understand how the world works. Then I want to use that understanding to do good.
I loved science lessons at school. I was lucky that I had good teachers as well as enjoying the subject. So it was natural to study science at university and then find a job that uses my skills.
Although my degree is in chemistry, I find that my jobs have required knowledge of a little bit of physics and biology too, so I’m always learning something new.
I think science is really important as it is the best way we have to understand the world around us and improve everyone’s lives. I have always liked science, so for me becoming a scientist was a natural choice.
science, or rather scientific thinking, has been part of me for so long that I don’t know any other way of being. I love getting to understand how the world works and how we can solve some of the big challenges that the world is facing
