Hi,
I like science because it provides useful resources to understand how things works.
It has a set of rules and tools that allows you to explore and discover the world around us without getting lost in the process.
It is enlighten and fun!

I think it’s fun to find out new things that no-one else knows, but more importantly it has lots of practical uses to make the world better.

Science has been something I was interested in since school. I had a science teacher who was very enthusiastic about the subject which definitely helped build my love for it. This carried on through to sixth form college with some very passionate teachers and finally on to studying Chemistry at university.
That being said, the thing I like most about science is as much as we know, there is an awful lot that we do not know yet. Working in research, you end up uncovering a bunch of ways something doesn’t work often more than finding ways it does. It helps to explain why something might happen the way it does. It is like putting together pieces of a jigsaw and then stepping back and seeing a picture forming the more that you discover and find out about a reaction and why it works under certain conditions. And yet, it is never completed, there is always more to do and more to discover, learn and understand. Always a way to make a process better, faster, more efficient. That’s why I like science.

I’ve liked science since I was a child, my mum said I was always asking questions and wanting to understand how things work. I also like solving problems and learning new things. One of my earliest memories was watching TV when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon. Then I got to secondary school and liked doing experiments in the chemistry lab. I had an inspirational chemistry teacher and later studied chemistry at university. While doing my PhD I decided I wanted to do something useful with my science knowledge, which for me meant I wanted to work in industry, and that’s what I’ve done ever since. I started by working on figuring out how to stick paint to plastic car bumpers. Then I got involved in the plastic boxes used for DVDs…there is a reason why they were lighter in weight and more impact resistant than CD boxes! Next was plastic pipes for plumbing, and plastic which makes food packaging easy to open. After that, it was materials and composites for planes, cars, medical implants (like knees) and smartphones. And now it’s about making all of that more sustainable.

I love science because for me it’s an exciting job – always changing and we get to find things out for the first time and become the experts in something. I get to travel sometimes and I get to meet and talk to a lot of interesting people – including you guys!
More than that, it’s really satisfying to know that the work that I do in environmental science could make a small difference in improving the world, both now and in the future.

I liked a lot of subjects in school. My favorites growing up were graphic design and history. But what I like about maths and science is that the patterns they identify in nature reappear in many different scales and situations. It’s nice to encounter things in your day to day life that you have a fuller understanding of due to learning science. As for why I chose a job in science, though, that was more because I wanted to work on something impactful for the future.

I found the subject fascinating at school because I enjoyed understanding how the world worked.
I loved chemistry because it could be summarised as “keep electrons happy”.Now I enjoy learning new things every day, applying my knowledge to answer both technical and legal questions and explaining to non experts what it all means for their business. By enjoying science I am able to do my bit to save the world.

It helps me understand the world and to figure out answers to things even if they’re not science themselves. The scientific method (observing, coming up with theories, measuring, testing) is super helpful in most things.
