Because I enjoy it, it’s interesting and I can see that the science I do results in new products which make a difference to people and the environment.
For example, over 15 million people have our materials implanted in their bodies to elminate pain and help them move around better. It’s usually put in their spine but can also be used in other joints, in the skull and to fix broken bones. About 1 person every 30 seconds receives such a treatment. We’re also working on making knee replacements longer-lasting, lower weight and maybe less expensive. We make materials to replace metals in aeroplanes and cars to make them safer, and to save weight and reduce CO2 emissions.
I get to spend my days figuring out how to make the world cleaner and healthier. I also get paid to do what feels a lot like a hobby sometimes – I get to make things and learn how to make them better!
