Catalytic converters are important because they reduce the amount of harmful pollutants that are emitted from the cars exhaust system such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons, which contribute to air pollution. They work by converting these harmful pollutants into less harmful substances, such as carbon dioxide, water vapor and nitrogen gas.
If catalytic converters were part of all cars, there would be less air pollution, the world would be cleaner and healthier. Secondly, there would be fewer greenhouse gas emissions, which could help to slow down the process of climate change.

When JM invented catalytic converters in the 1970s, acid rain and air pollution in cities was reaching an unliveable level. Since then, the air has been cleaned up, almost completely removing acid rain from the skies in Europe and the UK, and the air over our cities is much less brown.
