I have a couple of idols and role models. There have been inspirational scientists in history, e.g. Galileo and Marie Curie. Closer to my job, my research director Liz Rowsell is a role model for how to be a scientific leader and a leader of people, and she was given an OBE for her work in promoting STEM education and equality in science
I am a big fan of Marie Skłodowska-Curie, as she is the only person so far to have been awarded two Nobel prizes in two different science disciplines. But closer to me, I work with many great colleagues too, like Prof Emma Kendrick who does fantastic experimental work on battery materials.
There are so many people who have done great things. Some have made big impacts, some small. Science is made up of us learning from others and adding our own small discoveries. If science were a house, then every discovery is one brick.
Outside of scientists I think that Greta Thunberg has helped make people think a lot about climate change. She is passionate and speaks very clearly about the challenges. And she has been confident enough to talk infront of a lot of very powerful people.
