When I was a lab demonstrator I used to do the thermite reaction which mixes aluminium powder with iron oxide and heats them up to make molten iron.

I got to use a massive machine that us also used to mix rubber for car tyres, but we were making a fancy catalyst clay. The machine was huge and it was great to see it working

At my place of work safety was extremely important. We would always design our experiments so that they wouldn’t be dangerous.
When I worked in coffee, we would sometimes roast the beans too hot or too long and they would often set fire. It was very smelly, but not dangerous becuase we had the right safety procedures in place.
