Mitochonria are parts (also known as organelles) within animal (or more correctly, eukaryotic) cells. They act as the power source for the cells, using the energy from respiration where they produce a chemical called ATP which the rest of the cells can use for energy. They have a lot in common with bacteria and so the theory of how they came to be in the cells is really interesting as it is thought originally it started as a symbiotic relationship between two cells.
