I would say that GCSE science and maths are the most important to be a scientist.
But surprisingly many other subjects are useful – for example English for report writing, design/art for creativity, languages are useful when working with multinational teams, maybe even drama or music for the confidence to stand up in front of others and talk about your project. Scientists have to be well rounded people.
