John Grasmeder answered on 9 Jun 2023:
I get to work with many scientists from all subject areas – from nuclear scientists and electronic engineers to surgeons, in industry and in universities – it’s allways interesting because there’s something new to learn. I get to solve problems that no one has solved before by inventing new materials and thinking about how to make everything sustainable and environment friendly.

Sharron Kenny answered on 9 Jun 2023:
I like how flexible it is and how I plan and control my own work schedule. I can choose weather i need to be on site and in the lab that day running experiments or if I have a lot or reports and paperwork to write up then I can work from home remotely those days.
i enjoy travelling for work also and attending conferences about my kind of work and meeting other scientists. I also enjoy mentoring young scientists on my team and giving back

I like feeling that my work is worthwhile and could make a positive difference. It’s also great getting the chance to find out about lots of different cool areas of science. I started uni wanting to do Physics, I ended my degree as a Biochemist, then did a PhD in Microbiology & Molecular biology, worked for a bit in the Pharmaceutical industry on biological medicines and now work with Chemical and Process engineers working on Industrial Chemistry. I also like the problem solving – how to best represent a complicated process with the available data, assess what processes have the biggest impact etc.

Emma Spooner answered on 9 Jun 2023:
It is super flexible, so I can decide when to get my work done. It is also super varied, so sometimes I am at my desk analysing data, sometimes I am in the lab, and sometimes I am attending talks or visiting companies.
I also love discovering things no-one else ever has, and getting the opportunity to constantly push myself and learn more. Because I work on solar cells, I also enjoy feeling like I am contributing to solving climate change -

I can see the impact my highway schemes have on people. It is especially exciting seeing people happily cycling along.

I love that I get to make a difference with my science. I also love that I get to go into the lab and make things. Finally, I love getting to work with such a diverse group of people from all around the world and all walks of life.

Amy Stockwell answered on 10 Jun 2023:
Many things.
– The variety – some days I’m selling our company to potential clients, sometimes explaining the concepts to non experts and others I’m concentrating hard on modelling and calculations.
– My colleagues – I work with an nice bunch of people.
– I’m making a difference to the world – I’m helping companies to lower their environmental impacts.
– I’m learning new things every day -

It gives my satisfaction as I can see the impact in society.

Maddy Carter answered on 12 Jun 2023:
I like that every day is slightly different as my lab work changes based on my experiment plans. I like that my colleagues are motivated and interested in each others work and solving problems together.
The freedom that comes with research and development is great, it means I am always trying to come up with new methods or better techniques to get good quality data.
I also like that my job is not tied to my computer, I don’t need to sit in front of the computer screen to get my work done, I have to go into the lab to do the experiments! -
Ian Duffy answered on 13 Jun 2023:
I love working with people to solve interesting problems, and to help other people understand why those are the right solutions. And I love doing things that have real value to society.
