I think my chemistry degree was useful for the chemical knowledge it gave me as it opened the door to my first job in a chemical company many years ago. During my PhD I really learned how to do research – how to think, how to ask questions, how to plan experiments, how to make sense of the results and how to work coopoeratively with other scientists. Those are skills I still use every day.

My qualifications have helped by giving me a good science background, but I have jumped around between chemistry, physics and engineering, so it’s good to remember that you don’t always need to stick to the exact area that you are qualified in!
Doing a chemistry degree was great to give me a broad overview of science, so that I could specialise after that.

I did an engineering degree, and the engineering mindset I developed have helped me enormously in understanding the world and understanding how systems work together.

I have a chemistry degree but have always worked with a range of engineers (chemical and mechanical), physicists and food scientists. My degree gave me a good understanding of a range of concepts, so I can talk about the basics of a lot of science and engineering.

If I look at my current job, most of it is covered by GCSE and A’level maths and science. But the confidence in using it in a variety of different ways has come from my degree.

I am now an Assistant Professor, so having a PhD is a requirement. But what I find really useful for my job are many of the “soft” skills I acquired during my PhD and my time as a postdoctoral researcher.

my PhD got me the experience I needed to get my first job. When I moved roles inside the company, it was actually to use the work in my PhD even more, as well as use some of the other qualifications I’d picked up along the way during my old role.

Yes, my qualifications were very linked to the engineering roles I performed. This enabled me to build the experience that propelled me to where I am now.
