      XRF stands for X-ray florescence spectroscopy.

      and it shines a beam of radiation at your material and this radiation is then reflected back as a wavelength of energy. each element in the periodic table has its own unique wavelength. so this enables you to then identify the composition of a material. not only that but depending on how much radiation is reflected back of a wavelength type you can also tell how much is there
