      Hi Georgie

An insertion device takes about a year to go from the drawing board to being installed. However we are designing a new type at the moment called (and this is a mouthful!) a Cryogenic Permanent Magnet Undulator. This will be cooled with liquid nitrogen and will probably be about two and a half years from drawing board to completion. (Cryogenic engineering is very hard because different materials shrink different amounts over different temperatures!)
