About Me:
I am 21 years old and live with my family in Sunderland. When I am not at work or college, I like reading books, listening to music, and going for walks along the beach near where I live.

I really enjoy going to the theatre and seeing musicals with my family, as I always love the music. I also enjoy meeting up with my former school friends whenever we can, we go out for food or stay up all night watching DVDs and eating unhealthy food, which makes it a nice treat!

I use a computer to draw things that are used in science research. I use machines to make these and other things. I have recently made something that will go to Antarctica, it will be used to drill deep down into the ice.
-
My Typical Day:
I wake up and drive to work for around 7:30am. I then take a walk around Durham with a coffee before I start work at 9am, where I use the machines to make lots of different jobs. I go for another walk at lunchtime with one of my colleagues, before working more on the machines until I go home at 5pm. Once home, I like to sit down for a meal and relax!

On my morning walk, we often see wildlife such as deer and foxes as they wander through the woods. On an afternoon, we visit the Botanical Gardens in Durham and sit with a coffee, enjoying some peace and quiet from the loud workshop machinery.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would use it for more School Outreach projects, to show how Mechanical Engineering is used in the real world.
-
Education:
I went to Fulwell Infants/Junior school, followed by Monkwearmouth Academy and Monkwearmouth Academy Sixth Form, all of which are in Sunderland. I am currently at Sunderland College, where I go one day a week to receive more training related to my work.
-
Qualifications:
I got 11 GCSEs when I left school at 16, my grades were Mathematics – 7, English Literature – 6, English Language – 6, Chemistry – A, Biology – A, Physics – B, German – A, French – A*, History – A, ECDL (ICT) – A*, and RE – C.
I then sat my A-Levels when I was 18, and my grades were Mathematics – C, Physics – D, and French – C.
From doing my apprenticeship, I have a Level 2 NVQ in Performing Engineering Operations.
I am currently at college in order to obtain a Level 4 NVQ and HNC in Performing Engineering Operations.
I hope to continue my studies and get a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
-
Work History:
My current job is actually the only employment I have ever had, and I started here when I was 18. I did do some work experience whilst in secondary school and Sixth Form, one of which was in a civil engineering business (working on roads, bridges etc.). My other work experience was as an assistant speech and language therapist in a primary school for children with special needs, as this was another career path I was thinking about following.
-
Current Job:
After finishing my apprenticeship last year, I qualified as an assistant technician in the Mechanical Engineering Workshop. I really enjoy my job, as being able to create my own designs and then use the machines to make them into a reality. I am also the first and only woman to be employed in this section of the department, while I found this a bit strange and scary at first, I am very happy where I work and feel I fit in well. It has never stopped me from being able to do my work.
