That’s a really good question, and I actually don’t have any idea! Our eyes water sometimes to protect them from damage. For example when you get dust in them your body produces water to flush away the dust.
I’m not sure why we cry when we are sad though – try asking one of the other scientists, because I’d love to know the answer too!

I think crying releases calming hormones in to the bloodstream? I believe that’s why it’s done at both extreme sadness and extreme happiness.
