I quite like this one: (Charles Babbage talking about the computer he had just invented)
On two occasions I have been asked [by members of Parliament], “Pray, Mr. Babbage, if you put into the machine wrong figures, will the right answers come out?” I am not able rightly to apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such a question.
I also like this one by John von Neumann, a mathematician who helped develop the atomic bomb:
If people do not believe that mathematics is simple, it is only because they do not realise how complicated life is.
