Cells make copies of themselves all the time. This can be to repair damage, or to replace themselves when they get old, or to make more of themselves as things grow. When you make copies of copies mistakes start to creep in. Little differences from the original which then get carried on into future copies. This is how mutation happens. Tiny changes which by gather over time and change the original into something different.
