When the sperm fertilises the egg, they fuse together to form one cell called a zygote. The zygote contains information (DNA) of both the mother and the father which is needed to make all the cells of the body.
After this stage the zygote divides into 2 cells, then 4 cells, then 8 cells and so on until a ball of cells is formed. This ball of cells then goes and fixes itself into the wall of the mother’s uterus, where it gets all the nourishment it needs from the mother’s blood. The ball of cells continues to divide and forms specialised cells that form different parts of the body – eyes, heart, brain etc. until it is fully developed at 9 months.
