Most men have an X chromosome and a Y chromosome, while most women have two X chromosomes. The Y chromosome can only be inherited from your father, and has the genes which gives you male features.

However, as always with genetics, very occasionally it can be more complicated than that. Also some people who develop male or female features (with whatever genes) might decide (for many reasons) that that doesn’t feel right to them – and after all they are the person who knows themselves the best.
