I like to think not. Sure, the conditions we have here are pretty special. Just close enough to the sun to be nice and warm, not too close that the sun has burnt off our atmosphere and our water… iron core at the centre of the planet which keeps us spinning, big enough planet that we were hot enough to have volcanoes which have thrown out some pretty crucial gasses into our atmosphere… it’s a whole load of things that have made the Earth such a good home for life. But maybe life on other planets wouldn’t look like it does here. After all, even in the deepest ocean ridges, in the gaps beneath the plates where magma pushes its way onto the seafloor, even where there is no light, and little oxygen, crazy little creatures thrive on Black Smokers (see vid)… if life can survive there, I have a feeling there’s life out there on other planets.
