Everybody is judged by their appearance, and people (in general) treat others better if they are beautiful and look well presented (apart from those who are jealous of them). This is a fact of life and we all know that. Women are more likely to feel like they are expected to wear make-up to be ‘well-presented’ and also may feel it is important to look more beautiful.

I’m not a big fan of lots of make-up, because I feel I can’t connect with the ‘real’ person, although I suppose the way somebody presents themselves is very much a part of the real them.

Once you know somebody, you begin to stop judging them as much by the way they look (even after a knowing them for just a few minutes).

There is also peer-pressure and fitting in involved somewhere. Lots of men wear make-up too, some more subtle than others.

What Tom says is true, but it always baffles me why I feel the need to cover my spots with make-up but men don’t! Why only girls??

I don’t know the reason why human society has evolved this tradition. Perhaps the men were expected to be strong and good hunters and the women wanted to attract the best hunter because he’d be the best provider for her children?
What’s always puzzled me is that in the rest of the animal world, it often seems to be the male that’s the decorated sex whilst the females are less brightly coloured.
