When I was little, I though I would be a motorbike driver. Then when I got to about 14, I thought I may be a fighter pilot, but I really hadn’t thought about being a grown-up very much. I just happened to do the subjects I enjoyed for A-level and then literally applied for a degree course on a whim (within a space of about 4 or 5 days between somebody suggesting it to me and the application forms being sent).
The more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea of going to Uni, and I met my wife in my first week there. That’s when I started to chose a career path, but it wasn’t until I realised how much I enjoyed my projects during my second degree course that I chose to do a PhD.
I never even knew what a PhD was growing up, and only about 15 people from my school year went to uni, I’m sure none of them have gone down the route of a PhD.
