For many people, it’s very hard living with a disfigurement. Every day you feel like you have to overcome a huge amount of stigma, field the same misinformed questions or, if it is your child, defend the mark on their face. We regularly hear people who have been told ‘you need to wash her face’ or ‘what a terrible burn he has, people like you should be in jail’ when talking about birth-marks.

The treatments we do can be enough to turn this around for some people, so they can feel a part of society and have the confidence to go out without facing these issues. I want to be able to do this for all the people who come here for treatment.

I have already done things which have improved the way we treat some people, but there are plenty of changes that can be made to improve the approach we have here and also the way other clinics do things.

I hope that my work will enable all the scientists using nanoparticles for cancer research to work out how to make nanoparticles that work even better, so eventually we will have something really good that can treat lots of different types of cancer.

The stuff that I work on is used by people to improve their technology. For example, pharmaceutical companies are developing new drugs to try and cure all sorts of lung diseases using machines that I’ve designed.
