I guess we dream in order to keep us motivated to sleep, as sleep is needed for us to recover. When I am tired I dream more. The dream keeps me curious of what will happen, like when watching the movie. And that keeps me asleep until I rest more.

Great question! The brain is the least well understood thing we know if. How on earth does a collection of simple cells passing chemicals and electrical signals to each other make a picture? It’s like magic. When you sleep, your brain organises all the things it’s experienced during the day into memories. It’s shuffling lots of bits of information all over the place trying to make sense of it all. As it’s doing that, random pictures appear in our dreams. We know the brain can make pictures because it takes the light collected by our eyes and turns it into a sensible picture. If it can do it in the day, it can do it at night, too!
