Some days don’t always go to plan and things can often go wrong, such as lab experiments. But sometimes that’s also a good thing, as you can learn from mistakes! I’ve learnt from plenty and I think that’s made me a better scientist 🙂

Science doesn’t always go to plan, so you need to persevere and be resilient. One of the problems with the way academic research works is how it is funded – scientists often have to spend a lot of time writing grant proposals to ask for funding, or writing reports, and not so much time doing the science!

Some things go wrong, investigations can be long and seem to go nowhere, sometimes need to repeat things.

Sometimes I am the first person to ever have to answer the sort of question I need to, and there’s no one who is an expert who can help me. That can be difficult. However, that means that *I* am the expert, and I get a chance to figure out how to navigate the situation in the way I think is best, which is rewarding.

Sometimes the process and investigations take time. So, solving some problems gets delayed.

That sometimes, no matter how hard you try, you just can’t find the answer to a question.

repeating the same thing over and over is important to know you results aren’t just by chance but it can get a bit exhausting and boring sometimes!

I think my least favourite thing about science – particularly working in academia – is how competitive it is. I think there is a constant battle to be ‘the first’ – the first person to do a certain experiment, or the first person to publish a paper about a particular subject. It makes it hard to focus on what you’re doing properly. It also means it’s sometimes difficult to talk to people about your work, because everyone is very ‘cagey’ about what they’re doing – I like to share ideas and information but then lots of people think you’re trying to steal their ideas! Science is better when it’s collaborative.

I think that many people think it’s boring and not very creative. We do new and innovative things all the time, and hopefully make things better for everyone.

It is notoriously hard to prove something conclusively in many fields of science 🧫
