I love problem-solving! As a child I loved things like word-searches and crosswords. Science is a whole field of solving problems. I get to use my imagination, and it’s awesome when I finally find a solution that works.

I am naturally nosey and wanted to know how things work! As a student I studied Geology as it covered all the major sciences with Geochemistry, Geophysics and Paleontology (for Biology) plus a few other weird and wonderful things, such as Crystallography and Sedimentology (where we learnt to lick rocks!). As a result I have had various jobs in Science and technology for the last 35 years.

I was good at science in school, so it was natural to continue with it to see where science in my life could take me

I fell into it really, I didn’t know what I wanted to do – but I don’t regret it!

I’ve always been curious about the world and how things work. I like finding out new things, being creative and solving problems so science has always interested me!

I love that there is so much we do not know that can be explored with science! Also that really tiny things, like pollen, can tell us so much about the environment of the past and how the climate and people have changed it! I also like problem solving, and I believe science is the best way to answer so many problems.

I didn’t choose a career in science (I studied engineering!). It happened by accident! There was not enough staff at my workplace to work on climate science research, so I pitched in to help. As they say, the rest is history!

I always loved problem solving, and liked that science let you be curious about the world, ask questions and be trusted to solve them. It’s not a subject where there is always a ‘right’ answer – there is just an answer that you come to based on the facts you uncover and the evidence you can assemble. It’s like being a detective!

I liked science and engineering topics from early childhood, but doing science as a career only came to me in the last year of university, when I decided to do a PhD.

I enjoy the process of investigation, experiment, coming up with explanations, and presenting findings to others, and all these aspects are rewarded in science careers.

Because I’m curious. I like asking questions and trying to figure out how things work. I love learning, and I love observing our world. And I like complexity!

At school I really enjoyed science subjects but I also enjoyed English and languages so I couldn’t really decide what I wanted to do. The thing that helped me pick science was how interesting it was to solve problems and find out how things work. What you learn in science lessons forms the basis of science as a career but there is a lot more variety than what is taught at school!

I did other things first, but pursued data science full-time after moving to Scotland and realising there are opportunities here to build a company and obtain work.
