I didn’t like school very much so I left to do A-levels at college.
Then I did a level 3 apprenticeship. This was 2 years working in an analytical chemistry lab while studying for a BTEC in applied science.
Then I started a level 6 apprenticeship. This is in my current role in High Throughput Experimentation while doing my Bachelor’s degree in chemistry over 5 years.
I did my last exam for my degree last week! I’m looking into a qualification in robotics – maybe a Master’s degree
I quit engineering to go into IT for a few years in my 20’s (the “DotCom” boom) but in the end missed the variety, the travel, the outdoors, the labs + the hands-on stuff that an engineering job brings, so I went back into it again after ~3 years… since then, I have tried to change role every three years to keep things interesting, and to try to work on more and more consequential projects. If you pick good (consequential, challenging and fun) projects, and find good people to work with on them, your career will take care of itself 🙂
After secondary School, studied Applied Microbiology for 4 years then relocated to the UK to study Molecular Microbiology. After that, worked for about a year before commencing my PhD (paid to do research in a specific area). After my PhD I Have been working at SEPA for a year.
Its been a great experience for me, learnt so much and now experienced in various microbiology techniques, met so many Scientists along the way and I hope to become a Lecturer one day.
