Hi Riley, that’s a good question!
So, as I am sure you have guessed water is an important ingredient in whisky (and beer). Legally you are only allowed to make Whisky with just water, yeast and barley. Anything else and its legally not called Scotch Whisky any more
But did you know, that to make 1 litre of pure alcohol (whisky), you need around 125 litres of water!! Mad isn’t it? So much water!
Now, am guessing you know all about climate change??
Well, how much water that is available for humans to use is linked to climate change.
The more water we humans use, (i.e., for drinking, cooking, showering, farming and in industrial processes like making clothes or paper) the more we effect the climate. We need water to help keep the planet cool!
The worse climate change gets it causes more water problems, like floods, droughts and competition for the available water.
Its like a bad cycle!
On top of all that, the energy needed to move and treat this water we use produces a lot of carbon dioxide, making it all worse.
Anyway, humans need water to survive!
Did you know that 1 in 3 people live without a safe fresh water supply? And did you know that by the year 2040, we will need 50% more water because of a growing population and expanding industries?
Scary huh?
That’s why so many industries, like the whisky industry are trying to use less water when they make things. It means the water can either be left in the environment or used elsewhere. This will help to slow down/stop/reverse climate change.
I hope that answers your question?
If you need me to explain anything else just send me another question.
Thanks very much for asking and taking interest.
Hi – don’t tell anyone but I’m actually an Engineer!! Using less water is good regardless of what for. Water gets transported long distances to get cleaned and then return to taps. It takes lots of energy to clean it and provide the pipework. Water is precious and we should use it wisely.
