The most common way into a science job is to study a science subject at university, which normally takes 3 or 4 years depending on what type of degree you do. After that, you could look at joining a company who does science work, or many scientists work for the government in researching and studying the environment, the oceans, how we farm, or statistics like maps or the results of the census. Many scientists also work at universities; these scientists will have finished their first university degree and then done more study, called a PhD and then a Post Doc, which are when you are paid by the university to do research for them via experiments. A PhD takes another 3 or 4 years.
You are already a scientist! Science is about being curious, wondering and finding things out. There are lots of ways to use science in everyday lives and in lots of jobs, but to have a career in science, the most common route would be to go to university to study it – but there are lots of other ways including apprenticeships and there are so many different areas of science that there isn’t a typical route or path.
