Not really – I have received a couple of small scholarship-type pots of money – where someone has paid for me to go on a course for the summer or something like that, but I haven’t got one that paid for me to go through uni or anything.

Yes, I’ve had a couple of pots of money like scholarships. When I was doing my undergraduate degree I applied for – and was successfully awarded – a scholarship to carry out a research project in my summer holiday, which helped me to know that scientific research was for me and to springboard my research career. I also had a funded studentship to study for my PhD and then I’ve applied for and received a few small pots of money to carry out smaller projects. I’ve also applied for lots of these and not been successful!

No, but my MSc was paid for by the company I used to work for.

Many PhDs in the UK are fully funded – this means that someone is paying for you to do the research work, which pays you a small but okay wage. That someone is usually government funded through a group of senior scientists that organise what to fund each year depending on what research is worthwhile to fund. Some companies will also fund research if it helps their goals – I know someone who’s research into shark skin was sponsored by a swimming suit making company, because they wanted to understand what about shark skin helps sharks swim fast.

My PhD was funded by the National Environmental Research Council, who agreed to fund my work because it helped us understand climate change.

I also was given some smaller sums of money as prizes for good grades during my time at university, which is sort of like a scholarship.

Yes I got a scholarship for my PhD, so was paid for 4 years to do research after which was awarded a PhD.
I also got funding to do a 12-weeks summer project in the Lab whilst I was in Uni. This opened my eyes to research and a great opportunity for me.

Yes I’ve been lucky enough to get scholarships on a couple of occasions, but I missed out on others. Keep an eye on what opportunities there are and don’t be disappointed if you miss out on something – these can be hard to get.
