About Me:
I have a wife and three children, I love being outdoors when I’m not working, mostly in the mountains or sea doing something physical. I’m not eating meat at the moment to see if that makes me fitter and faster.

I’m driven by questions constantly entering my head about why we do things in the way we do and is there a different hopefully better way. I’m constantly doing research I can’t help it. I try to mend everything that gets broken before throwing it away. Often if something does have to get thrown away, I’ll take it apart for bits and to see how it works.

My Work:
I work on implanted medical therapies. So manmade devices like hip joints, heart valves, tubes as blood vessels. Then more recently using living cells as the material to form the medical therapy. This leads to the field of regenerative medicine, repairing a body (person or animal) by putting growing cells in their body to do the job the body has stopped doing, or to help the body do its job better. This is very different from implanting a device that will not grow and develop like a fixed hip joint or blood vessel tube. This is very very cool and exciting.

My Typical Day:
Start 07:00, run to work 4-8 miles, shower, breakfast at my desk with coffee, push through as much as possible all the immediate deadlines from emails and research writing. Then many numerous meetings to talk about research and plan research, setup experiments and equipment and get all the work running. Meet with people from hospitals and from industries about their work and their research needs. Less often meet with groups of the general public to discuss research and developments. Exchanging knowledge and information is very important in my role. Learn about what people want and need and avoid and learn form the mistakes of others who have tried something before.
Lunch will have happened somewhere in the day, run home (another 4-8 miles), eat tea, most likely pickup a bit more work on the laptop in between running Dad’s taxi service and other things around the home.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would use the £500 as the prize money to have an open writing competition. The title of the writing would be What has Scientific Research Me ? The paper can put any spin and perspective on that, but would need to be fact based with some artistic interpretation accepted for entertainment purposes. Special bonus points for SciFi – Sci reality connections.
