Wow. Mainly my family. In different ways, and at different times they’ve followed their own paths and been successful in different fields. Within psychology I look at people like Stanley Milgram, whose work in social psychology has been hugely influential.
I think I mentioned in my profile – my mum. She’s my inspiration because, as a psychiatric (mental health) nurse, she’s worked with lots of different people with lots of different needs and tried to help them n different ways. She’s always seemed to me to be caring and thoughtful about them, and to work hard to do right by them to help them – even when that’s caused her some challenges personally. I think those values – working hard, care and compassion – are essential to being a psychologist, or even just working with people in general. I had the ‘academic smarts’ that she didn’t (I went to uni but she didn’t), but she showed me how to put my knowledge into practice in order to make a difference to actual people’s lives.
I was blessed to have many inspiring people in my life, starting with my father, several undergraduate lecturers, my PhD supervisors, and even my fitness coach. The one thing that they all have in common is a tremendous passion for what they do – a passion that is almost ‘contagious’, that energises others around them and pushes them to do their best (whether it’s to be a better person, to study hard, or to do 5 more push-ups).
At the moment, I’d say my girlfriend is my inspiration. I thinks she’s the strongest, most determined and resilient person I’ve ever met. She’s had some really difficult times in her life, but she’s managed to maintain a positive outlook on life nonetheless.
