Why do the planes go missing without trace?

I think the 2 main hypotheses were 1) dodgy weather conditions; or 2) a strange magnetic field which made the compasses point the wrong direction. But either way, I think it’s been proven to be a myth =)
Having said that, there are definitely strange places in the world which have ‘micro-climates’ and this causes really strong winds that sometimes take pilots by surprise! Don’t worry though, these are always quite low (near the top of the mountains) and the airline planes fly way high above them so we’re pretty safe.
Cheers,
Colin.
