Worm infections are multi-celled organisms, much larger than things like bacteria. To get rid of them, the body needs different types of cells other than the kind which just gobble up bacteria (like neutrophils and macrophages). These cells are known as eosinophils and mast cells which an release chemicals around the worm from granules they keep stored inside them. These chemicals can cause the body to produce more mucus, or for the muscles of the bowel to contract, which helps to expel the worms. There are many other chemicals which are released by these cells which all have different effects on the parasites.
