It depends. In term time when I am teaching less, but I get into the labs about a day and a half a week with project students. In the summer it can be the whole week.
It depends. Somedays I can be the whole in the lab doing experiments and some other days I am not in the lab at all but I spend the whole day in front of my computer analysing results, reading scientific publications and planning new experiments. Also, I go to quite a lot of seminars, talks and meetings. At the moment, I don’t teach. Scientific work is quite varied!
My work days are very similar to what Laura has described, only I do do some teaching and mentoring out and in the laboratory, mainly in the Summer months to Masters’ students doing projects with me. I also have to say one of the great perks of my job is getting to travel to conferences and meetings around the country and the world. Today, I was in meetings all day with the ministry of defense, last week I was in Tuscany and a conference. It can be exciting and varied some weeks, and other times repetitious for weeks on end trying to get an experiment to work!
