      Hi Victoria,

I speak English as a first language, and conversational Spanish (I used to live in Mexico when I was young, and have tried hard to keep my Spanish up, but it is FAR from perfect). I think speaking a second language even at a conversational level has opened door of opportunities for me. I’ve been able to talk to other scientists from Mexico, Spain who I might not have been able to communicate so well with in English.

I would say overall learning at least one other language is a brilliant exercise for your brain anyways! The key is to use it often!

      Adios!

      Carmen

I speak a little bit of holiday Spanish, Italian and French. Although I always have to brush up before I go. I think that anything that makes your brain work is good for you. There is some evidence that continually challenging your brain protects you from some types of dementia in old age
