I am a science communicator – meaning I communicate the kind of work I do to the general public and kids. I tell them, about what job I do and how it helps people. But I noticed that every time I do such talks, lot fewer girls interacting. Even at work, I noticed not many women stand up to speak and take more job then they are assigned – and it’s not because they are not capable but I realized that it’s because of several subtle conscious and unconscious biases that exist in our society globally. The pressure that we should only conform to certain norms like “boys can’t cook” or “girls can’t fix a leaky pipe or change a light bulb” is very prevalent in almost all cultures.
So I started speaking in schools about how we can get over these biases and instead encourage all the kids, boys and girls, to take subjects that they are interested in without being judged.
After doing some of these talks in schools and Science and tech festivals, I was invited do to a TEDx talk about my journey fighting these stereotypes as a woman of Colour. I gladly accepted because I was getting a platform to speak and show that stereotypes affect everyone and how its time to get over it if we want to survive the 4th industrial revolution. Since the world population is 50- 50 (Men and Women) we need all of them to support and participate in STEM fields.
