• Question: What do cough sweets contain that help us with our coughing?

      I’m not sure they really have an active medicinal ingredient. Actually, I think the real answer is I don’t know. Sorry.

      The only thing I can think of is honey which soothes your throat by giving it a coating. I find drinking hot lemon and honey really helps.

      I didn’t know this but according to my sources (wikipedia!), the most common ingredients are Dextromethorphan or Codeine which act as ‘cough suppressants’. That is, they work by stifling the coughing reflex.

      Well – they are in cough medicines – I am assuming they may also be added to cough sweets.
