Question: if your on the phone too much can you get brain desease

Stephen Curry answered on 15 Jun 2010:
The most recent evidence (from a very large study) shows that there is no risk of brain disease (brain cancer) from using a mobile phone. Although mobiles do emit weak microwave signals, and microwaves are good for heating things up (especially if they contain a lot of water), it looks like the effect on brains is so small that it causes no harm.
So keep talking! But make sure not to give yourself repetitive strain injury by too much texting…

Hey, this is a really topical question because it has just been in the news recently. Three weeks ago results were published from a study of 13000 phone users in 13 countries. The study found no evidence for a link between phone use and cancer. However some newspapers have ran with scare stories such as you’re 5 times more likely to get cancer when using a phone. However these scare stories have simply changed the results of the study to sound more exciting – they have basically used really bad maths. One of my colleagues has written a response to the bad maths in the Times Online which you can read at:
It’s quite shocking but you simply can’t believe what you read in the paper as they just make stuff up 🙁

loads and loads of studies on this seem to suggest its safe – the biggest risk is being run over – there is a huge increase in kids especially being knocked down when on teh phone or texting…..
My Bro who works in mobile phones says all schools should erect a mobile phone mast on their roof, as the biggest risk if there is any at all is that when phones are a long way from a mast, they use more power to connect. Its the phones (because they are next to your head), not the masts which pose any potential problem… -

Hi Crystal.
We know something is dangerous if we can see that it has harmed someone, but it’s very hard to say with certainty that something is completely safe, because even if no one seems to have been harmed we could always find something new in the future that would change our minds.
Using a mobile phone involves exposure to radio waves which are a non-ionizing form of radiation, very different from the ionizing kind which can cause serious illness.
Scientists from around the world are investigating the safety of non-ionizing radiation, and this is a good idea as we are nowadays exposed to a lot more of it (from phones, wi-fi, etc.) than our ancestors were. You hold a phone near your head, and I imagine the radio waves could warm your brain a little, but to the best of my knowledge there is no clear evidence of health effects, and so there is no reason to think that mobiles are not safe. Certainly, I use one (although the battery has stopped working), and I am not worried at all.
