I have always been involved in science outreach since my PhD studies and subsequently became a STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) Ambassador. My local science centre which coordinates the STEM program in Dundee sends regular newsletters about different outreach activities. I saw the ad for I’m a scientist and liked the idea of reaching a much larger group of students (especially of an older age group) than my usual activities do. The online element seemed a great idea as well. I didn’t realise it was a competition until very recently when I was filling out my profile!
I thought it sounded like such a great idea! There was nothing like this when I was in school. I wasn’t encouraged in any way to follow a career in science when I was in school. In fact, my guidance teacher told me I should consider becoming a waitress…..very different to what I’m doing now, although I do fetch some patients a glass of water from time to time.
When you’re in school, you may be making some of the most important decisions in your life. This is a great way in getting school pupils (and possibly even the teachers) to get an idea of how many different careers there are in science.
The competition for the prize money is a bonus but it would be amazing to win and put the money to good use.
I just like to reach out to young people whether they still be at school or are early in their education or career. I don’t think of this as a competition and I would hate to think I was competing against fellow scientists. But apparently we are as I found out early this week – we are being eliminated. So some of us have to be ‘the weakest link’!
