Pituitary gland- in short, is what can be termed as the “master gland” – given that it controls a lot of other organs which actually secrete the hormones. Its job is to send the appropriate signals- for e.g. to the thyroid gland- to help secrete thyroid hormones, signal to the adrenal to help secrete steroids – so on and so forth
An infarction may (important to stress that not always!) cause a break join these signals and thus cause the end organs to stop secreting the hormones. Most of them have variety of impact but the most dangerous of them all would be the impact of a loss of steroids from the adrenals- thus causing life threatening illness
