There are two main types of diabetes which are caused in different ways.
Type 1 diabetes usually occurs in the young and involves the auto destruction of the cells that produce insulin the the pancreas. People with type 1 need to have daily injections of insulin.
Type 2 diabetes occurs generally in older people, though some young people can develop it. It is when the body does not produce enough insulin or does not respond to the insulin produced (termed insulin resistance) so the body ends up with high circulating blood sugar levels. People need to take drugs such as metformin (the drug I research) which helps to reduce circulating blood sugar levels.
