By a very circuitous route. I did a secretarial course, then became a lab technician in the US, returned to the UK to do my A levels and then go to University in London, back to Canada to do a PhD and then returned to the UK where I became a lecturer and then worked my way up the career ladder. NOT recommended!
I was working in admin in a hospital but anything human science-y related fascinated me. Since I didn’t do science subjects in school (something i really regret), I had to do college night classes. I started uni when I was 25 to get a degree in Biomedical Science. I had various jobs as a lab assistant to get experience. I also did a portfolio so I could become registered as a Biomedical Scientist. I love it! Wish I’d done it sooner, although all my previous jobs helped me get the one I now have.
I did a more conventional route. Did separate science GCSEs, maths, chemistry and biology for A level followed by an honours degree in Human Biology. I then went to Dundee to do a PhD and have been there ever since. I am now on my second postdoctoral research position.
