Probably when doing my Masters in Imaging & Microscopy…

There was a marine biology group who wanted to use our imaging skills to work out how do starfish control the many hundreds of suckers on their legs to move about. So I got to work with a group of different starfish for a while and that was cool!

I guess after that it was working with a tiny crustaceans called mesozooplankton. I remember one in particular that was less than a quarter of a millimetre across and looked like a miniature very spiky crab! I remember thinking it was quite special because these were the last samples collected literally just before the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disasters off the coast of Japan.
