In a normal person low blood sugar, or ‘hypoglycemia’, doesn’t happen very easily. When you eat a meal excess sugar is stored as glycogen in muscle and liver cells – when you don’t eat for a while the glycogen is turned back into sugar. if you wait even longer your body breaks down fat stores and protein (muscle) too.

But your body will start wanting food to replenish the glycogen pretty quickly, your stomach makes ghrelin – the hunger hormone – which tells your brain that you are hungry.

Eating is associated (especially chocolate, sugar and fats) with stimulation of the pleasure centre in the brain, and release of dopamine – you probably get grumpy from the withdrawal of dopamine rather than low blood sugar it’s self.
